ARAGORN EU in Action: Successful LIVE Demonstration of ReSoil® Technology in Prevalje, Meza Valley, Slovenia

ReSoil® in action. From research and pilot testing to real-world implementation, the LIVE demonstration in Prevalje highlighted innovative approaches for tackling heavy metal-contaminated soils and supporting sustainable land management in the Meza Valley.

Last Thursday, we successfully demonstrated the ReSoil® technology in Prevalje, Slovenia, within the Horizon EU project ARAGORN EU.

The LIVE demonstration addressed one of the key environmental challenges in the Meza Valley - soil contamination with heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and zinc.

During the event, ENVIT Ltd. presented the results achieved within the ARAGORN EU consortium and demonstrated the ReSoil® process on the mobile pilot unit - the ReSoil® trailer.

ReSoil® is an innovative EDTA-based soil washing technology developed by ENVIT Ltd. that enables efficient removal of heavy metals from contaminated soils in a closed-loop, emission-free process without wastewater, while preserving soil as a natural and functional substrate for future use. ♻️

In addition to the ReSoil® demonstration, results of two immobilization-based remediation approaches tested in the Meza Valley were also presented:

- stabilization using biochar, developed by NGI - Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, and
- stabilization using iron-based materials, developed by Comenius University in Bratislava / Univerzita Komenského v Bratislave.

While ReSoil® removes heavy metals from contaminated soils, these approaches aim to reduce the mobility and bioavailability of metals by immobilizing them within the soil matrix.

With ARAGORN EU consortium partner ICONS, we conducted co-creation and stakeholder engagement using interactive questionnaires for citizens, decision-makers, and researchers on future land use priorities and sustainable remediation of contaminated areas in the Meza Valley.

Special thanks to the Municipality of Prevalje for their cooperation, active engagement, and hosting of the event, as well as for supporting collaboration between the local community, research, and innovation initiatives. Thank to everyone who filled out the survey questionnaire.
